The road to the current Gerber Knives started with a coincidence. Joseph Gerber founded Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising in 1910. One Christmas season, he purchased 25 sets of kitchen cutlery from local custom knife maker David Murphy for client gifts. One of those clients happened to be Abercrombie & Fitch, the outdoor clothing and gear supplier. A&F were so impressed with the quality of the knives they asked Mr. Gerber to supply these to them for their catalog. Ultimately Mr. Gerber left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.
Building a reputation for Ingenuity and craftsmanship the company grew and expanded it's line to include a wide variety of knives and cutlery. In 1966 Gerber Legendary Blades relocated to the I-5 corridor in what is now Tigard Oregon. In 1987 the company was sold to Fiskars, a Finnish company known for its craft tools and scissors.
