A combat knife is a large knife designed for the military or a paramilitary unit. A misconception is that "combat knives" are still specialized for close combat. But since the end of trench warfare, the combat knife has been designed primarily for utility and use as a tool to clear foliage, to chop branches for hiding vehicles or to open ammunition crates, etc.
Modern military forces have limited use for close quarters knives as weapons. An example of a knife designed as a weapon for close combat is the trench knife. Modern combat knives come in many shapes and sizes. Most military units today have a standardized type of combat knife that is issued to their infantry soldiers.
The United States Marine Corps, uses a standard issue combat knife that dates back to World War II. The KA-BAR knife. One other well-known combat knife is the British military Fairbairn-Sykes which is more of a dagger with due to its double-edged design. This Fairbairn-Sykes dagger is one of the only modern combat knives still designed for close combat instead of field use.
