The Bowie knife refers to a specific style of knife that was made popular by Col. James "Jim" Bowie. Although it was originally designed and produced by James Black. Its commonly used as the name for any large sheath knife with a clip point.
The most common version known historically as a Bowie knife usually has a blade that is at least six inches in long, with some blades being as long as 12 inches or more. They have a relatively wide blade that is one and a half inches to two inches wide. Made of steel averaging between 3/16" and 1/4" thick. The backs of the blade often had a strip of softer metal, normally copper or brass, which was believed to be used to catch an enemies blade. Others think it was meant to provide support and absorb shock to prevent the breaking of the poor quality steel from which these original blades were made.
